Catherine A. Babcanec
New Brighton
Catherine A. Babcanec, of New Brighton, passed away Friday, May 5, 2017, at Good Samaritan Hospice at Heritage Valley Beaver, just shy of her 90th birthday.
Born May 23, 1927, in New Brighton, a daughter of the late August and Julia (Bogota) Frkuska. She was a retired registered nurse and had worked at Providence Hospital, Westinghouse, Red Cross and Passavant. Her biggest job, the one she loved the most, was raising her five children on Grove Avenue after the death of her husband at a young age. She also had been a volunteer for Riverside Head Start. Catherine was a member of the First Catholic Slovak Union and Holy Family Catholic Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Babcanec, March 22, 1967; two brothers, Dr. Augustine J. Frkuska and William J. Frkuska, and one sister, Mary Campos.
Surviving are four sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Wayne (Carole) Babcanec, Norwalk, Ohio; James "Cy" (Anna) Babcanec, New Brighton; Joseph "Boe" (Patricia) Babcanec, Sharon, and Andrew (Annette) Babcanec, Jermyn, Pa.; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Patricia (Joel) Mekler, Shenango Twp.; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eleanor Douthwaite, Beaver Falls and Frances Frkuska, Beaver, many nieces, nephews and their families.
Friends will be received Tuesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the J&J SPRATT FUNERAL HOME, 1612 Third Ave., New Brighton, www.jjsprattfh.com, where prayer will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Tom Kredel officiating.
Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Brighton.
In lieu of flowers the family wish memorials be made in her name to the Shenango Valley Children's Transplant Fund c/o First National Bank of PA, 3320 E. State St. Hermitage, PA 16148.
