Andras 'Andy' Spagina
Andras "Andy" Spagina, 79, of New Brighton, passed away Friday, September 7, 2012, at Allegheny General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born May 6, 1933, in Szentdomonkos, Hungary, he was the son of the late Ferenc and Margit (Kovacs) Spagina. Prior to escaping to America, he had been a member of the Hungarian military and a student at Debrecen University. When the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 broke out on October 23, 1956, he became a Freedom Fighter for the revolution. On November 24, 1956 he, with his two cousins, escaped to America. After retiring as a crane man in the steel industry, he became a dual citizen and traveled to his home country nearly every summer. As a youth living through the dangers of WWII, he was on the Hungarian National soccer team and later was an accomplished chess player.
Surviving are four children, Frank Spagina and his wife, Linda, New Brighton; Stephen Spagina Sr., Rockwood, PA; Margie Spagina Rowan, New Brighton and Andrew J. Spagina and his wife, Lena, New Brighton; five grandchildren, Heather (Roger) Frazzini, Frank Spagina Jr., Stephen Spagina Jr., Alexander Spagina and Olivia Rowan; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kirstin and Alyssa Frazzini; two sisters, Margit Varga and Gizi Muranyi, both of Hungary; two cousins, Endre (Arlene) Csoman and Joseph (Peggy) Fabri, both of Beaver Falls, many nieces, nephews and their families and Marianna Sipos of Hungary who was so helpful in his last days in Hungary.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Barna Spagina.
Friends will be received Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the J&J SPRATT FUNERAL HOME, 1612 Third Ave., New Brighton, www.jjsprattfh.com, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ilona Komjathy of the 3rd Ave. Calvin Reformed Church, Beaver Falls, officiating.
