David Francis Leahy

December 17, 1952 — August 1, 2023

David Francis Leahy, 70, of Patterson, passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.

Dave was born in New Brighton on December 17, 1952 to the late Dave and Dee (Deku) Leahy.  He was a 1971 graduate of Riverside High School, where he played football.  Dave was a former foreman at B&W and Moltrup Steel, and most recently retired as a cook at the Backdoor Tavern, where he was the proud inventor of the “Smokey Blue” wing sauce that is a favorite to many customers.  He was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan and cheered for all of the Pittsburgh teams, especially the Steelers every Sunday during the season.  He also enjoyed watching golf in his man cave with his loyal dog, Odie.  Dave’s greatest passion were the years of service that he devoted to New Brighton football, where he served as Head Coach of the midget program and as an assistant coach at various levels for several years.  He was a lifelong member of the Oak Hill Vets and enjoyed frequenting Baker’s Buck Hut.  He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and softball.  If you knew Dave, he always enjoyed being a goofball and having a beer on his front porch.’

Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Bonnie (Slaugenhaupt) Leahy, son, David Leahy Jr (Tracie), daughter, Shawna Leahy (Ryan), granddaughters, who Pappy loved the most, Kelsi Sofranko and Haelyn Schwartzel.  Also surviving are siblings, Michael Leahy (Kathy), Pamela George (Lou), sisters-in-law, Donna Rudar (John) and Linda Lee (Dave), several nieces and nephews, and too many friends to name.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jerry, and in-laws, Norm and Dorothy Simmons.

Friends will be received Saturday, from 1-4pm, in the J&J Spratt Funeral Home, 1612 3rd Ave, New Brighton.

In lieu of flowers family asks that donations be made to Beaver County Humane Society.  The family would like to thank the nurses of Gateway Hospice, Sierra, Tanya, and Melissa for their kind care of Dave.
