Emil M. Smolar, 90, of New Brighton, passed away Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Heritage Valley Beaver, surrounded by his loving family.

Born April 20, 1924 in New Brighton, a son of the late John and Anna (Znczik-Palko) Smolar. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was retired from Duquesne Light where he served as a field man engineer. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the American Legion Post #19, both in New Brighton. Emil had a love of animals of any kind and enjoyed spending his free time enjoying nature at Big Rock Park.

Surviving are his wife of sixty years, Joan (Regney) Smolar; his four children, Barb Lohle, Patterson Twp., Martin (Dorenda) Smolar, Charlottesville, VA, Mark (Mary) Smolar, New Brighton, and Diane (Richard) Smolar-Moore, New Brighton; 11 grandchildren, Douglass (Kirsten) Pletz, Martin (Julie) Smolar Jr., Jason (Emily) Pletz, Jamie Lynn (Ryan) Jordan, Brandon Smolar, Brandy (Ryan) Lockheart, Stephen Smolar, Nicole Lee Moore, Danielle Jane Moore, Nathan Smolar and Collin Lohle; six great-grandchildren; one cousin, Rudy (Eleanor) Smolar, New Brighton, and several nieces, nephews and their families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Anthony Smolar.

Friends will be received Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. in the J&J SPRATT FUNERAL HOME, 1612 Third Ave., New Brighton, www.jjsprattfh.com, where prayer will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church, with Rev.  Father Tom Kredel officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Brighton.

Members of the Beaver County Special Unit will meet at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the cemetery.
