J. Edward Ayers, 85, of Beaver Falls, died Monday, September 12, 2016 at the home of his daughter in Chippewa, after a lengthy illness.
Born July 20, 1931, in the Oak Hill section of New Brighton, he was a son of the late John E. and Grace (Sylvester) Ayers. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with U.S. Navy as an air traffic controller. After the service he worked at the former B&W Tubular Steel and attended night school at Geneva College for his engineering degree. He then worked for 30 years and retired as General Manager and Vice-President for the former Superior Drawn Steel Company of Monaca. After retirement he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and the soup kitchen at the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver Falls. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #19, and the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church both of New Brighton and attended the evening Community Bible Study group in Beaver. Ed was a longtime devoted Steelers fan and enjoyed tailgating with family and friends. He also enjoyed golfing with the guys.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife of 46 years, Ethel (Steffen) Ayers, January 13, 1998; his son-in-law Ray Merriman; one sister Dorothy Cater and one brother Robert Ayers.
Surviving are his wife Myllie (Patterson) Denny Ayers; four daughters and four sons-in-law, Aleda and Ron Hileman, Craigsville, WV; Laura and Doug Winland, Negley OH; Beth and Mike Zellhart, Butler; Ann and Barry Emge, Chippewa; eleven grandchildren: Leslie, Angela, Jeff, David, Elizabeth, John, James, Mary, Matthew, Jake and Emily; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends Friday, September 16, from 4:00pm to 8:00 pm at in the J&J Spratt Funeral Home, 1612 Third Avenue, New Brighton, and Saturday from 10:00 am until time of memorial service at 11:00 am at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1001 10th Street, New Brighton with the Rev. Frank Kantz officiating.
Private inurnment will take place in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes memorials be made in his name to either the soup kitchen at the First Presbyterian Church, 8th Avenue, Beaver Falls, PA 15010 or Meals on Wheels.
