John H. Mason

John H. Mason, 92, of New Brighton, passed away Monday, April 8, 2013, at the home of his daughter.

Born December 15, 1920, in New Brighton, a son of the late Edwin S. and Rose (Rank) Mason, he was a veteran of World War II serving for four years with the U. S. Navy. John retired from the Laborers Union Local #833 where he was the secretary / treasurer and also served on the district council. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church of New Brighton and had sung in the choir at the former St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a former councilman for the Borough of New Brighton. John was an avid Steelers fan, enjoyed walking and traveling especially to Virginia Beach.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John and Kazumi Mason, Framingham, MA; one daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Rick Purk, Patterson Twp.; one sister, Rose "Dolly" Vukich, New Brighton; a dear friend, Mary Mooney, New Brighton, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Edwin "Bus", Frank "Dad", Gene, Ralph and Paul, and two sisters, Mary Kralic and Clara Smith.

Friends will be received Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the J&J SPRATT FUNERAL HOME, 1612 Third Ave., New Brighton, www.jjsprattfh.com, where prayer will be held Friday at 1 p.m., followed by Mass of Christian burial at 1:30 p.m. in the Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Tom Kredel officiating.

Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, New Brighton.

Members of the Beaver County Special Unit will meet at 1 p.m. in the cemetery to provide military honors.

The family would like to thank all of his aides, especially Jessica Harper and Amber Messmer, and Heartland Hospice.
