Paul Lapic, 91, of New Brighton, passed away Saturday June 18, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospice, Beaver, with his grandson, Joshua, by his side.
Born August 8, 1925 in Daugherty Twp., a son of Ukrainian immigrants, the late Michael and Mary (Firko) Lapic. Some of his most cherished childhood memories were of life on the family farm. There, growing up speaking Ukrainian he didn’t learn English until the second grade. He was drafted in 1943 for WWII during his senior year at New Brighton high school to serve as a U.S. Navy corpsman in Okinawa and China with the 1st Marine Division. In 1950 while attending trade school and working for Duquesne Light he was mobilized for the Korean War, serving as a Navy Petty Officer 3d Class, Hospital Corpsman, with the 1st Amtrac BN, 1st Marine Division, in Pusan and Masan, Korea.
After the war he returned to Duquesne Light retiring with 38 years of service. During that time he built his own home in Daugherty Twp. where he raised his family and grew a vineyard. He started Lapic Winery becoming the first modern winery in S. W. Pennsylvania where he worked his labor of love with his wife and family for 29 years. He enjoyed sharing his wine with his customers and wine aficionados winning many awards throughout his career. He was catholic by his faith.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years Josephine (Samchuck) Lapic, four sons and daughters-in-law Paul (Joanne) Lapic, Baden, Michael (Judy) Lapic, New Brighton, Dennis (Rose Mary) Lapic, Industry, Philip (Beverly) Lapic, Wexford, 12 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
Friends will be received Monday from 2-4 & 6-8 in the J&J Spratt Funeral Home, 1612 Third Avenue, New Brighton, where a blessing service will be held Tuesday at 11am with Rev. Fr. Tom Kredel officiating.
Entombment will follow in Sylvania Hill Mausoleum, Rochester.
Members of the Beaver County Special Unit, and Navy Honor Guard will meet at the cemetery Tuesday at 11:30am to provide full military honors.
