Samuel Fredrick Powell, 83, of New Brighton, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at home, surrounded by his family.

Born June 4, 1928, in Unionville, PA., he was the son of the late Elmer C. Powell Sr. and Thelma Ball Powell.  Samuel made his living as a steelworker at Babcock & Wilcox, but his passion was spending time with his family while drinking coffee and sharing stories at the kitchen table.  He was a farmer at heart and took great pleasure in tending to his gardens and flower beds, generously sharing his harvest with friends and family.

Samuel is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Dolores (Vandiver) Powell; seven sons, David Powell (Gladys), Dennis Powell (Betsy), Bruce Powell (Marcy), Dale Powell (Colleen),  and Philip Powell, all of New Brighton and Wayne Powell (Mary Ann) of Toms River, New Jersey;  four daughters, Barbara Campbell (Buddy) of Murrysville, PA, Wendy Holiday (Bob) of Richmond, VA, Sandra Haynes (Joe) of Bossier City, LA and Amy Lucaric-Adkins  (Brian) of New Brighton; nine sisters, Ruth Goehring, Jean Eichler, Rose Dietrich, Beulah Brown, Clara Deemer, Alice Rambo, Naomi Smith, Janet Tatro, and Mary Ann Waire; five brothers, Elmer Powell, Ralph Powell, Charles Powell, Ronald Powell, William Powell; 26  grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Glenn Powell and his brother, James Powell.

Friends will be received Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4  and 6 to 8 p.m. in the J&J SPRATT FUNERAL HOME, 1612 Third Ave., New Brighton, www.jjsprattfh.com. Friends will be received Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. in THE CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE, 417 PENN AVE, NEW BRIGHTON,  Rev. Donald W. MacNeil, officiating.

Private Interment will follow in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park, Daugherty Twp.

Our family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Grace Tarabay and Hope Schaffer and the staff at Catholic Hospice and his granddaughter, Stefanie Powell, for the loving care provided.
