Mary Jane (Altsman) Thompson, 92 of New Brighton, passed away Thursday August 18, 2022 at
Heritage Valley Beaver.
Born May 26, 1930 in Patterson Twp. a daughter of the late Earl Francis and Mary Altsman.
More than anything else, Mary Jane loved her family; often when asked about her children, she
referred to them as her blessings. She was perhaps the most caring, sweetest person on the
planet. Like many of this “Greatest Generation”, she began working at a very young age and
continued well past the normal retirement age. For many years, she was a sales clerk for the
former Youth Center of Beaver Falls and finally retired as a bank teller for the former Century
National Bank. She was a long-time member and President of the Beaver Valley Piece Makers
quilting group, enjoyed her card clubs including regularly playing cards with her lifelong friends
from high school and was a group leader for organized bank tours. Mary Jane was a member of
the New Brighton United Methodist Church.
In addition to her mother and father she was preceded in death by her husband Herbert S.
Thompson in 2005, one son William M. Thomas (2021), one grandson Billy K. Thomas (2007)
four brothers Henry, Earl, William and James, two sisters Dorothy Fleisher and Laura Osman.
Survived by two sons, Herbert R. (Mary) Thompson, Waynesburg, David J. (Tracey) Thompson,
Bethel Park, three daughters Dawn Frances (Richard) Boyd, Auburn, IN, Laura (Michael) Rubino,
Monaca, Mary Ann Oster, Mt Airy, MD, daughter -in-law Karen Thomas, Patterson Twp., 14
grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and
their families.
Friends will be received Sunday from 2pm until 6pm in the J&J Spratt Funeral Home, 1612 Third
Avenue, New Brighton, where funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00am with the Rev,
Gary Hilton officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the New Brighton
Private interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Beaver Falls.
