Walter J. “Whitey” Debo Jr., 77, of New Brighton, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.
Born October 21, 1945, in Hays, Kansas, he was a son of the late Walter J. and Margaret (Long) Debo Sr. He was a member of New Brighton High Schools class of 1963, going on to University of Findlay for his Bachelor’s and then to University of Pittsburgh for his Master’s in teaching and education. Thirty-eight years of his career were spent teaching health and physical education, mostly in Hopewell Area School district.
One of his greatest passions was his love of playing and coaching baseball. As a high school All-Star shortstop, he was selected to play in the East-West American Legion All-Star game where he was coached by Pie Traynor. He was offered to sign as a free agent for the Baltimore Orioles but chose to attend Findlay. At Findlay, he played shortstop for the baseball team where he received numerous accolades, including being named All-Conference. Whitey coached all levels of baseball in New Brighton, from youth league through the high school American Legion team. He enjoyed his years spent playing softball for the Pittsburgh Hardhats, but especially loved his years of coaching baseball in the Beaver County Rec League for “Debo Movers.” He loved to fish at Moraine State Park. Most of all though, he loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife Judy (Miller) Debo, children, Walter J Debo III, Brandon Mineard, Jodi Debo, Tara Mineard, Brittany (Garrett) Wells-Debo, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Sparkle (Bradley) Debo, Cindy Brelloch, Jackie (Sam) Nolder, brothers, Greg (Colleen) Debo, Brian (Claudette) Debo, Adam (LouAnne) Johnson, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents Whitey was preceded in death by sister, Trene Newton and brother, Larry Debo.
